Burkes Pass is located in central part of the South Island of New Zealand in an area called the Mackenzie. This route was well used by Maori in pre European times. In earlier days of European settlement Burkes Pass was the pioneer village in the Mackenzie Country sited on the banks of the Opihi River. It is now an important heritage site on a major tourist route to the Mackenzie basin, Mt Cook and Queenstown.
